Höxter Town Hall
Höxter's town hall is one of the oldest in northern Germany. In connection with the Weser bridge, first mentioned in records in 1115, there must have been a market hall on the bridge market at the crossroads of two long-distance trade routes. In the middle of the 12th century a stone town hall was built there, first mentioned in 1351. On the north side there was a bower. In 1608 Prince Abbot Dietrich IV von Beringhausen of Corvey ordered the reconstruction of the medieval town hall. After Höxter had undergone the Reformation in 1533, the prince-abbot attempted to re-Catholicise the town, which was done in 1604 when the prince-abbot's troops forcibly conquered it.
The reconstruction and extension of the Town Hall, with its protruding half-timbered upper storey and striking octagonal staircase tower on the market front, took until 1618, as the disputes between the town and the prince-abbot had incurred high costs. The tower, asymmetrically placed to the left of the central axis for visual effect, is accessed through two richly decorated Renaissance portals. They lead to the former wine cellar and the entrance hall with the chimney dating from 1614. A spiral staircase leads to the attic, at the same level as the half-timbered tower. In 1622-23 the small council chamber was built on the ground floor, together with the wooden bay window on sandstone corbels at the western gable end. In the gable of the richly carved bay window there is a figure of Justice with a sword and scales.
"The best things in this world are beautiful virgins and money."
